A process engineer sits in a weekly performance review. The dashboard shows that site three has consistently underperformed on OEE for the past six weeks. Everyone in the room can see the trend. What the first stage of digitalization delivers
The early phase of industrial digitalization produces genuine value. Machines that previously reported their status only when something went wrong begin sending continuous data. Historians store process parameters over months and years. Dashboards aggregate that data into legible performance summaries. For organizations that previously operated with paper logbooks and weekly Excel reports, that transition is transformative. Decisions that previously relied on intuition and experience now have numerical backing. Deviations that previously went unnoticed for days become visible within hours.
But this phase has a natural ceiling. The transition from visibility to intelligence is not primarily a question of more sophisticated analytics tools or better algorithms. It is a question of data structure. Intelligence emerges when data from different sources is organized within a shared semantic model: one in which machines have consistent identities across systems, events are explicitly connected to assets and production context, and process parameters live in the same data environment as the production orders and operational decisions they relate to.
That shared model does not replace the systems that produce the data. Historians still store time series. MES systems still track production orders. Maintenance platforms still manage work orders.
